What Is a Registered Psychotherapist?
A Registered Psychotherapist (RP) is registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), which regulates psychotherapy to protect the public. CRPO describes the scope as the assessment and treatment of cognitive, emotional or behavioural disturbances by psychotherapeutic means.
The title is protected. According to CRPO, only registrants in the RP class may use 'Registered Psychotherapist' or 'RP' without a qualifier.
A bio lists training, but it cannot show how a psychotherapist sounds in conversation. First Session profiles show the designation and include a short intro video, so you can judge fit before you book.
What to know about Registered Psychotherapists in Vaughan
Online and in-person
Vaughan residents can book video sessions or sessions in the room, and the listings above show who offers which. McMaster University researchers pooled 54 randomized trials of cognitive behavioural therapy. They found moderate-certainty evidence of probably little to no difference in effectiveness between remote and in-person delivery.
Out-of-province psychotherapists on First Session are insured to provide online care in Ontario, which widens the field you can compare.
Credentials in Ontario
CRPO sets the path from RP (Qualifying) to RP: the registration exam, 100 hours of clinical supervision and at least 450 hours of direct client contact.
An RP (Qualifying) practises under clinical supervision and has up to five years from the certificate's issue date to finish those requirements. CRPO requires the exact title 'Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)' or 'RP (Qualifying)'.
Cost and insurance
GreenShield reports typical private-pay fees of $120 to $250 per session for a registered psychotherapist across Canada, and says rates tend to be higher in larger urban centres. First Session's Ontario psychotherapist page says an RP (Qualifying) may charge less.
Sun Life added psychotherapists to its standard extended health plans for new proposals from May 12, 2024. Compare your plan's wording with the designation on the profile.
Vaughan languages and public care
Vaughan Economic Development reports that 85,960 residents, about 27%, spoke a language other than English or French at home in the 2021 census. The top five were Russian, Italian, Mandarin, Cantonese and Spanish.
Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital runs an Adult Mental Health Urgent Clinic at 3200 Major Mackenzie Drive West for adults who need urgent outpatient care. A physician or nurse practitioner completes the referral.
How to choose a Registered Psychotherapist in Vaughan
1Read the designation
Profiles show RP or RP (Qualifying). An RP (Qualifying) practises under clinical supervision. Check whether your plan names both titles, then choose the experience level and fee that suit you.
2Match the approach to your concern
RP describes registration, and the bio describes the approach. Filter by your concern, then look for named training such as EMDR or couples work.
3Watch the intro videos
In a video you can hear pace, tone and warmth. Watch two or three, then shortlist the psychotherapists whose manner feels easy to talk to.
4Use the free consultation
Book the free 15-minute consultation with a question ready. Good ones include 'What does the first month of sessions look like for my concern?' and 'What training do you have in this approach?'
