Therapy is something that has been long overdue for me. I think a way I would self-cope with anything happening to me is try to listen and help others so it would temporarily distract myself from my own issues. Therapy ended up being something I sought out when I had my first panic attack on Christmas that was triggered by my family. And it was then where both my mom and I thought it would be best for me to see external help.
What did you learn in therapy and how did it help you?
Interestingly enough, the reason I provided as my reason to see a therapist was to mend my relationship with my mother. After a couple of sessions of realizing what's truly best for me, I changed my reason for seeking therapy for myself, to be a better person and heal from countless things that happened in my past. That was my a-ha moment, and I started becoming more content with my life as a whole.
What is one thing you wish more people knew about therapy?
You don't need to go if some big traumatic thing happened in your life, sometimes seeing a therapist and having an unbiased experienced person listen to you is therapeutic enough. I think everyone can benefit from therapy and learn to heal any wounds we simply think we've let go of.
