How Sun Life coverage works

Sun Life is one of Canada's largest group benefits providers, and many Toronto employers use Sun Life to administer extended health and mental health coverage. What's actually reimbursed depends entirely on the specific employer's plan design, not on Sun Life as a company, so two people who both say they have "Sun Life coverage" can have very different mental health benefits, maximums, and eligible designations.

In general, Sun Life plans reimburse sessions with licensed, regulated practitioners such as Registered Psychotherapists (RP) and Registered Social Workers (RSW), which is why those two designations make up most of the therapists on this page. Some plans also cover Psychologists, sometimes at a different reimbursement rate.

What to know about Sun Life coverage in Toronto

In-person and online availability

Toronto has one of the largest pools of therapists on First Session, with strong in-person and online availability across most designations.

Ontario credentials commonly covered

Registered Psychotherapist (RP, regulated by the CRPO), Registered Social Worker (RSW, regulated by the OCSWSSW), and Psychologist (regulated by the College of Psychologists of Ontario) are the designations most commonly eligible under Sun Life plans, though limits and eligible designations vary by plan.

Cost and reimbursement

Session rates in Toronto typically range from $100 to $250. Sun Life plans usually reimburse a percentage of each session up to an annual maximum. We can't guarantee coverage, since this varies entirely by your specific plan, so always confirm the details directly with Sun Life or your benefits administrator.

How to confirm your Sun Life coverage

Check your Sun Life member portal or benefits booklet

Log in to see your specific mental health or psychological services maximum and which designations are listed as eligible.

Confirm which designations your plan covers

Some plans cover RPs and RSWs, others require a Psychologist specifically. This can vary significantly.

Note your annual maximum and reset date

Check whether your benefit resets on the calendar year or a specific benefit year tied to your employment start date.

Choose a therapist whose designation matches your plan

Once you know what's covered, filter your search accordingly to avoid unexpected out-of-pocket costs.

Submit your claim

Most Sun Life members can submit claims directly through the Sun Life mobile app or online member portal. All First Session therapists provide receipts that include all the information you need to submit your claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Sun Life cover Registered Psychotherapists in Toronto?

Many Sun Life plans do cover Registered Psychotherapists, but this depends on each specific plan. Check your benefits booklet or member portal to confirm.

What's the difference in coverage between an RP, RSW, and Psychologist under Sun Life plans?

Coverage can vary significantly by plan. Some employer plans list RPs and RSWs under one combined mental health category, while Psychologist sessions may fall under a separate, sometimes higher, reimbursement category. Always check your specific plan rather than assuming.

How much of a therapy session does Sun Life typically reimburse?

This varies by plan. Some reimburse 80-100% up to an annual maximum; others reimburse a flat amount per session. There's no universal answer, so check your specific coverage.

Do I need a referral to see a therapist under my Sun Life plan?

Most Sun Life mental health benefits don't require a physician referral, but this can vary by plan. Confirm with your benefits administrator if you're unsure.

Can I submit claims directly through the Sun Life app?

Yes, most Sun Life members can submit claims directly through the Sun Life mobile app or online member portal using a receipt from their therapist.

Is online therapy reimbursed the same way as in-person under Sun Life?

Generally, yes, as long as the therapist's designation is covered under your plan, but confirm this directly since some older plans have specific requirements around session format.
